Subtle reverberation

The other day while listening to Radio Paradise I was charmed to discover Imogen Heap.

Smooth variation combined with a subtle reverberation between this and that.

Here's a review for those interested.

Nitin Sawhney

I just happened to hear about this fine artist while listening to radioparadise.com one late evening. Nitin Sawhney creates music which is soothing to the soul, his Indian and mathematical upbringing producing profound subtle female vocals strengthened by sitar and tabla background sounds.

You might want to check out his website for more information: http://www.nitinsawhney.com.

I've been listening to three of his CD's, namely: Human, Prophesy and Philtre, the second of which is my favorite up until now.

The journey's long
And it feels so bad
I'm thinking back to the last day we had.
Old moon fades into the new
Soon I know I'll be back with you
I'm nearly with you
I'm nearly with you.

Changes

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

Living with war

I decided to spend the day listening to Neil Young's newest album called Living with War, over and over for as long as it takes to sink in.

Right now it's nearly eleven in the morning and I've heard it more than five times. The songs keep getting better and better. That guitar playing of his sounds as great as ever, even though like me he isn't getting any younger.

This is a long-and-winding political statement containing various snapshots of the real world at which my hero Neil has always been exceptionally good. His lyrics and the various sounds they make are right on target.

Thousands of children scarred for life
Millions of tears for a soldier's wife.

Thank you go in peace

The elderly parking lot attendant wasn't in a good mood.

Neither was Sam Bierstock. It was around 1 a.m., and Bierstock, a Delray Beach , Fla, eye doctor, business consultant, corporate speaker and musician, was bone tired after appearing at an event. He pulled up in his car, and the parking attendant began to speak. "I took two bullets for this country and look what I'm doing," he said bitterly.

At first, Bierstock didn't know what to say to the World War II veteran. But he rolled down his window and told the man, "Really, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you." Then the old soldier began to cry. "That really got to me," Bierstock says.

Before you go.

Ain't no companion like a blue eyed merle.

Come on now well let me tell you,

So of one thing I am sure,

My dog is so fine.
Yeah, ain't but one thing to do
Spend my nat'ral life with you,
You're the finest dog I knew, so fine.
When you're old and your eyes are dim,

Blue Mars is back

I can't believe it, but good ol' bluemars is back in town.

I used to listen to it all the time, but then one day it just disappeared into empty space.

This evening it reappeared from outer space again, like some evening flying saucer hovering down low above my rooftop.

Long ago, when the waters of Mars were still under
the ground and above the sky, our ancestors came to
this place and called it "Home". And from the high
Plains of Tharsis to the Elysium Ocean, from as
high as Mount Olympus to as deep as the floor of
the Hellas sea, one can still hear the song of our
brothers and sisters chanting to us throughout the
ages.

This melody is one that is made of hopes... It is
sang with the voice of nostalgia, and looks ahead
with pride. Listen...

I feel happy and relaxed again listening to those soothing, ambient sounds.

Shostakovich symphonies

The CD-box as I found it...On my way to the checkout counter at the local drugstore called Kruitvat I just happened to turn my head the right way at the right angle when I spotted it. All I wanted to buy was some shaving cream and deodorant, and then I caught it in the corner of my left eye.

The Shostakovich: Symphonies (Box Set), complete CD-collection of Shostakovich's symphonies 1-15 (WDR Sinfonieorchester, Rudolf Barshai) for only € 16!

So I bought the eleven CD-box and I was happy. In fact, I am listening to it now. I must admit that it is a rendition that I am not used to, less upbeat, slower and more extended, but it sounds really good.

Once in awhile you deserve a good deal in life, don't you think?

Everything we know is wrong

"I have drawn the conclusion that the fact of human alien contact at this time is probably the least understood and least recognized major force that will shape the future of the human species during the twenty first century and beyond. I do believe that not only are we being impacted by alien intelligence at this time, I believe we have probably been impacted throughout the entire history of human culture. I do think that eventually we will understand that our relationship with beings from other worlds or other zones of reality goes back to the very beginning of our sense of time. I think that's going to be one of the most extraordinary and perhaps devastating discoveries in all of human history. We will discover that practically everything we know is wrong, that actually reality is alot more amazing than we thought..."

Grrl Radio

I have always been a really big fan of indie music once it got started, and I would listen to streaming MP3 Internet radio all the time when life was simpler, pure and unadulterated. Then came the big swoop of the axe when the small webcaster settlement act h.r. 5469 (SWSA) was passed and all of a sudden independant non-profit folks (like myself) were banned from this activity. Like having one's hands chopped off. But that has been awhile ago, and slowly but surely and one by one, a number of brave souls are rising back up again. One of these is called Grrl Radio and it is is back up and running! Listen to Grrl Radio for the best selection of indie bands, unknown artists and my faves from the '80s -- everything from 800 Cherries to Tones on Tail. Barstool blues

Niel Young has always been my respected hero...If I could hold on to just one thought
For long enough to know
Why my mind is moving so fast
And the conversation is slow.
Burn off all the fog
And let the sun through to the snow
Let me see your face again
Before I have to go

I have seen you in the movies
And those magazines at night
I saw you on the barstool when
You held that glass so tight.
And I saw you in my nightmares
But I'll see you in my dreams
And I might live a thousand years
Before I know what that means

Once there was a friend of mine
Who died a thousand deaths
His life was filled with parasites
And countless idle threats
He trusted in a woman
And on her he made his bets
Once there was a friend of mine
Who died a thousand deaths

EMusic.com

Found this really great site where you can get a good selection of MP3 music files: unlimited. Not the usual daily grind of top pop music, but really good and obscure stuff that you would never find elsewhere. No Britney Spears (ugh) here!

You've got Indie, Gothic, Ambient, New Wave, Hardcore, Garage, Ska, Inspirational, Classic, Spiritual, Experimental, ad infinitum...

The site is called EMusic and it is "a revolutionary new music discovery service that offers an easy and inexpensive way for avid music fans to download and enjoy over 200,000 high-quality MP3 songs from established musicians. For as little as $9.99 a month, you can download as much music as you desire from EMusic's catalog. All of the music is legitimately licensed from record labels and artists, so you can feel comfortable knowing that songwriters, musicians and other copyright-holders are being fairly compensated for their work."

No more music

There will be no more music allowed for the common folk anymore. The Internet has been taken over by the blood-thirsty capitalists of America. Can you believe this? All of the sudden there was silence, and then I realized that it had really happened. This is depressing and a real shame. The truth of the matter is that because of the freedom to play your own music people were becoming more stimulated and allowed to enjoy an unheard of realm of all kinds of music. Because of this they were going out to the stores and actually purchasing MORE music. The truth of the matter is there are too many greedy folks out there wanting even more and more music. This is unfortunate and I am really pissed. Sorry about the language but I cannot help it. Money, money and more money. Aren't there enough poor folks out there who should be attended to rather than letting the rich get even richer?

Music is meta

Here's something new to really boggle your mind. Why do people enjoy music? There is something about the melodic stream of musical notes, the background beat of instrumental support and the intertwining form of the human voice combined with the rest of the sound mass which inspires us all. How could this be? While each person has his own unique preferences, the love of music is a universal appreciation for everyone across all cultures. Is this a natural result of evolution, does it have to do with survival at its best, or is it simply a by product of the infinite energies within us? There probably is no answer for this and there probably will never be a satisfactory explanation for this quirk of human nature. Except for the music itself which inherently expresses the reason why we like the music in the first place. Kind of like a meta-awareness where music is about music if you know what I mean.

My favorite music artist of all time is Neil Young. He just came out with yet another album called
Are you passionate? so of course I have been going to the music store every day now for the last few weeks hoping to discover it. And this morning there it was, the very last CD just waiting for me to pick it out of the music rack. I guess I am not the only fan in Gouda who was been anxiously looking forward to it's arrival. I have been blaring it on my new computer since I got back from watching Sabien and her field hockey match (they won 6-1, of course, and Sabien scored two impressive goals). One of the songs on the new CD is called Let's Roll. Supposedly, it was inspired by the passengers who overtook the hijackers on United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11th. If you are interested in learning more about this fine artist, then check out one of the many sites on the following list. Or you can go directly to the official Neil Young Website.

George Harrison died today

I cannot believe it, but just heard that George Harrison died today. He was the lead guitarist of the Beatles and died of cancer at the early age of 58. Just in case you do not know already. When I told my son, he asked me: who's that? When I mentioned the Beatles, he asked: who were they? But for millions of folks all over the world just like myself, his music will be long remembered. I remember playing at the swimming pool at the Stockton Golf and Country Club in sunny California during the summer of 1965. I was only eight years old back then. Someone's radio was blaring out the song "I wanna hold your hand". My parents kept saying what awful hair the Beatles had and that they should go to the barber. Can you believe that?! Their hair wasn't that bad at all.

George Harrison once said: "I think people who can live their life in music are telling the world: 'You can have my love, you can have my smiles. Forget the bad parts, you don't need them. Just take the music, the goodness, because it's the very best, and it's the part I give most willingly."

Life goes on and it is up to us the living to carry on the tradition of the dead.
